Chinese Museum – 22 Cohen Place, Melbourne

The Chinese Museum’s building, located in the heart of Chinatown, was built by the Cohen Bros. in 1890 and was originally used as a furniture warehouse.

In 1984, it was acquired by the Victorian State Government to establish a museum that would provide the heritage and cultural foundation for Melbourne’s Chinatown.

The Museum of Chinese Australian History was officially established in 1985 as a not-for-profit organisation, governed by an elected board of directors and operated by approximately 15 core staff.

The Museum has developed a collection of over 8,000 items of Chinese Australian heritage, many of which have been generously donated by Chinese Australians with long-standing family histories in Australia.

Through this extensive collection and ongoing research, the Chinese Museum presents the 200-year history of Chinese Australians to a wide national and international audience.
